We tell you what ingredients to use instead of sugar, butter or cream to prepare healthy homemade sweets with less sugar and fat.
Most pastry and confectionery products contain a high amount of fats and sugars. Therefore, its consumption is recommended occasionally. It is also preferable to make homemade candy before buying it; since the latter usually have, as a rule, a greater amount of sugars and additives to lengthen their shelf life and enhance flavor.
We propose to replace the most caloric and harmful ingredients for the health of sweets with others much healthier. In this way, we will not only reduce considerably the calories of our biscuits and cakes; but, in addition, we will be including healthier ingredients with a high nutritional value that will be useful for the proper functioning of the organism.
1. Sugar substitutes
Sugar is a very consumed food. It is found in most of the products we eat. The most popular is white or refined sugar. It comes from sugar cane or beet and undergoes an industrial refining process where it loses all its vitamins and minerals.
It lacks nutritional value, so it is nothing more than a supply of empty calories that our body can not use. We propose three different ways to replace sugar in the preparation of sweets and homemade desserts.
- We can use applesauce instead of sugar in the preparation of cakes, pastries or sweeten fruits. The puree retains all the properties, vitamins and minerals of the apple. It is healthy and brings sweetness to our elaborations.
- Another option is to replace white sugar with vanilla extract in the preparation of cakes or pastries. In some recipes, sugar plays a fundamental role when it comes to giving consistency and shape to the dough. However, it is about performing different tests. For example, use half the sugar and the other half, vanilla extract. Also, instead of white sugar, this can be brown or brown, healthier options.
- The stevia is a natural sweetener that has positioned itself as the great sugar substitute; for example, to sweeten coffee. It can also be used in sweet and dessert recipes
2. Fruit puree, avocado or banana instead of butter
To substitute the butter we can use mashed fruit (apple, pear ...). It will bring sweetness and flavor to the elaborations. Another good option is avocado. Like butter, it also has a significant amount of fat. However, it is healthy fats, useful for the proper functioning of the body.
Finally, you can also substitute butter for the banana in the preparation of biscuits, cookies or pancakes. Its creaminess and consistency are perfect to give these sweets the consistency they need.
In any of these cases, it may be necessary to lower the oven temperature or reduce the baking time. Therefore, watch your cookies or biscuits more often the first time you do it. You will catch the point right away!
3 eggs
The egg yolk contributes to a large amount of fat. A whole egg can be replaced by two egg whites. In this way, we will eliminate 5 grams of sugar and about 200 mg of cholesterol. The result will be equally delicious. We encourage you to take the test!
4. How to replace the cream?
The pastry cream has around 30-35% fat. It can be substituted for cream for cooking (20-25% fat). Another, a healthier option is to use yogurt or fresh cheese shake instead of cream. There is also evaporated milk, which provides density and flavor. These options are possible in any recipe, except those in which it is necessary that the cream is mounted.
5. Pure cocoa
The chocolate chips or nuggets so characteristic of desserts can be substituted by cacao nibs chocolate with a percentage of cocoa of at least 75%. The latter is much more natural. It is only roasted cocoa beans. Also, they are delicious. You will not notice the difference! In case the dessert requires the use of chocolate powder, it is preferable to use defatted cocoa powder. A much more natural and healthy option, without sugars or additives.
